Parts of the dragon are real, yea; though I think most of the shots of fire are SFX. I believe the total body shots of the dragon are done with stop motion.

I think the effects on this film would make for some interesting reading, it's one of the last pre-digital age films to use this suite of effects perfected through the sixties and seventies. It really does give the movie a different quality -- the dragon looks amazing and like a real part of the world.

Great movie for it's time and would be great it I could find it on DVD!! So now for my question... did Disney actually build a 30' dragon ( Vermithrax Pejorative) that actually 'breathed' fire for this movie? I heard they did... and that's what makes it so much better than CGI would be. If any info let me know. Thank you.

And it holds up extremely well for it's age, the effects look great.

Shouldn't be hard to find on DVD -- Amazon has a bunch of venders selling used copies very cheaply.

One of my childhood favorites, I recently rediscovered this when searching for the original Clash of the Titans after watching the (disappointing) remake. With the ever-increasing CGI budgets and ADD style pacing of modern fantasy overtaking the genre, Dragonslayer stands alone as a smart and hidden gem that rewards the patient viewer.

Thanks for the interesting read.

I remember Dragonslayer showing on our Movie Channel in two versions. One with the virgin feasting scene and one without. I taped it at the time (on good old VHS) and would lend it to those who didn't believe me when I mentioned that aforementioned feasting scene. I loved the film then, and it still stands up today.
