I think that's a good insight. And the kid's power of belief is what made the end (which presumably indicated the neighbor committed suicide -- though I'm not positive) a kind of triumph.

I thought the fact that the 'rocket' looked nothing like a rocket increased the power-of-faith, religious-aspect of the story (not to give too much away...)

Re: religion... Did you pick up on the kid saying "look at these hands!" Seemed almost biblical, showing of the scars, to me. That and the possible crucifixion aspect of the 'rocket.' (Or I could be reading too much into it!)

Hi Matt,

I enjoyed it as well, particularly the almost Bradburyesque feel of the piece. I thought the ambiguity of the device the neighbor was constructing was well handled, thought I do wonder if I missed something as the final description of the 'rocket' left me a bit confused. I wasn't sure exactly what it was trying to indicate (my suspicion was it was a gallows), so that did add a note of confusion to my understanding of the piece. Still, it was very compelling and well told.

My favorite was "Flower as Big as the Sky."

It seemed more literary than genre, but that's what makes the magazine so GUD.

Did you (Bill Ward) have any other thoughts on that story?
