Despite having not yet read any of George R. R. Martin’s massive fantasy epic A Song of Ice and Fire, I’m pretty excited by the recent news that HBO has gone ahead and ordered a pilot for A Game of Thrones, the first book in the series.

Here is a link to the news at The Hollywood Reporter.

I remember when the books were optioned — I thought it was an exciting but unlikely prospect. But now things are so much more concrete, and the station that brought us Band of Brothers, From the Earth to the Moon, Deadwood, and Rome — to name their biggest budget series — will be doing an honest-to-goodness high fantasy series aimed at adults. This is big. This is a first. This might just be one of those game-changing moments that redefines how the genre is seen as a form of popular entertainment. After a very disappointing run with their recent series, I’m glad to see HBO doesn’t appear to be squeamish about taking chances on something like this although, to put things in perspective, there is still quite a ways to go until we can be certain Thrones will make it to the small screen.

And, judging from the way Charlaine Harris’ books are eating up the bestseller lists thanks to the inexplicable success of True Blood, this could be great news on the book-end of the spectrum as well — not that the mega-bestselling series actually needs help, but anything to get people excited about reading genre fiction is a good thing.
