ConsiderPhlebasJohn Ottinger over at Grasping for the Wind has just posted part one of an ‘inside the blogosphere’ piece that asks book bloggers what world of fantasy or science fiction would they want to live in. An interesting assortment of answers that reveals each blogger’s personal take on various fictional realities. You’ve got a world of books, something described as ‘Plato’s cave on crack,’ Donaldson’s The Land before property values went all to hell, and an alternate history western featuring dinosaurs and air ships. And one Crotchety Old Fan explains the appeal of Farmer’s Riverworld as potentially combining the best in nudist colonies and writer’s workshops.

Hedonist that I am, I chose Iain M. Bank’s Culture universe as my answer. What’s not to love in an anarchic utopia of unlimited freedom and entertainments, and no responsibility? Beats killing orcs any day.

Also, I have to say after reviewing the clever names of all the blogs I really have to push on with my plan to give this blog an actual name. When I started, this was never supposed to be a blog — just an author website that used blog software. Hence the boring name. But now, in a world of Craphounds, Crotchty Fans, Whatevers, and Entering Octopi, my name stands out as rather boring. Whether I have to transfer the whole thing to another url, or just stick a title at the top of the page and insist that’s what you call this place, remains to be seen
