Midwinter cover sturgesOver at Black Gate today I’ve posted my review of Midwinter, Matthew Sturges debut fantasy novel which reminded me quite  a lot of Roger Zelazny. A good read, especially if you are looking for something a tad bit different in the departments of Sword & Sorcery and Heroic Fantasy.

I will later read the review… the thing is that maybe spanish publishers don’t translate this novel to spanish… they don’t translate authors like Michael Ehart or Charles R. Saunders… the Kane series of the great Karl Edward Wagner isn’t translated either…
by the way I need you to advise me… which is better for a fan of Robert E. Howard and Michale Moorcock… the Drenai series of David Gemmell… Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay… The gardens of the moon by Steven Ericksson or The black company series by Glen Cook…?
Francisco…

I think David Gemmell would be your best first choice, as his books are the closest to pure Sword & Sorcery style storytelling out of the ones you name. I have not read Erikson yet, but from what I’ve heard he seems a good choice as well — but only if you are in the mood for very long, complicated novels. Cook makes for a quicker read, and is very dark and inventive, but I did not really care for his prose (it might be better in Spanish!). I have not read Tigana, which is supposed to be very good, but I do know it is not really in the Howardian mode.

Shame you can’t get everything you’d like in translation; ‘Imaro’ especially is very good and a natural fit for a fan of Robert E. Howard.

and what about George R. Martin and A song of ice and fire…? in the middle of Howard and Tolkien?

That sounds about right — but I haven’t read A Song of Ice and Fire yet, either.
