Well, it has indeed been silent around here of late, as regular readers will have noted. I’m not dead, nor have I run away to pursue my dreams of carny life, but I have stepped back from blogging — for a while at least. I found that it fragmented my attention too much at a time when what I really want to do is put in some extra time on my fiction.
That’s not to say there won’t be posts over here (or at Black Gate), they just won’t be all that regular. Quite honestly I’ve enjoyed not having to worry about generating constant content, as steady reviewing can be pretty demanding. In the end, it didn’t come down to a question so much of time — though that is a factor — as of focus. Constantly thinking about a dozen little projects is a surefire way to make sure the big projects never even get started, at least in my experience.

Well, I’ll miss the blog, Bill, but am looking forward to reading the fiction. Any hints on the ‘big projects’ of which you speak?
And good luck on staying focused, by the way. I find this damned internet thingie to be quite distracting myself.
Yea, the internet doesn’t help much, does it?
‘Big Project’ wise I’m brainstorming a novel or series, and debating a work-for-hire offer. I’ll write more about that here I’m sure.
at least you don’t play warcraft….going to log in now…who needs to cook dinner right?
Well, at least Warcraft manages to keep folks off crack.
I’ve always feared that starting a blog to promote my own writing would leave me without enough time to do the actual writing it was supposed to promote. Your decision to ease back on the blogging here almost seems like a cautionary tale, as a result, but I think it’s more a matter of reprioritisation, in your case (with all the irons you appear to have in the fire, you just can’t turn ALL of them on a regular basis!).
While I sincerely wish you all the best in making your bigger project(s) happen, I will miss the more frequent updates to this site. It’s been eerie to note how similar the movies are with which your youth and my youth were misspent, and I’m grateful to have had my eyes opened by your well-crafted reviews to some interesting books I might otherwise have overlooked. I’ve also enjoyed your opinions on books I was already familiar with, even when – as with the ending of The Last Argument of Kings – I (respectfully) disagreed with them.
So: all the best, but come back soon (or as frequently as possible, at any rate).
