Over at the BG this week I posted briefly about how much I’m looking forward to the HBO project to give Martin’s A Game of Thrones – a book I haven’t even read — the series treatment. I think this show, assuming it gets made, has the potential to change the way adults see fantasy and teach mainstream audiences that stories set in fictional pre-gunpowder ages aren’t always ’safe,’ nor are they necessarily about the struggle of good vs. evil. It’s about time.

A cable series really is the perfect medium for this kind of thing, because it can give us the depth just not possible with a film, as well as deal much more unflinchingly with mature themes a network won’t touch. As a fan of shows like Rome, Deadwood, and Band of Brothers, I’ve got high hopes for A Game of Thrones.
